Hope-- When the inevitable heat of August descends on Arkansas,
it seems there’s a certain appeal to settling down in the welcoming
shade of a large oak to devour a juicy slice of cold and tasty
watermelon.
Perhaps that’s
why the Hope Watermelon Festival has in recent years been drawing
more than 50,000 people to the city’s Fair Park during in its
annual four-day run.
This year’s
festival on August 12-15 will again feature servings of nominally
priced, ice-cold melon by the hearty slice, as well as more
than 200 arts and crafts vendors, food sales, antique cars and
engines, motorcycle and baseball card shows, miniature train
and hot-air balloon rides, a watermelon auction, watermelon
eating and seed-spitting contests and a host of other activities.
